Question 1. Explain two ways the character/ or events fit the action adventure genre

From the extract I can see that Hot Fuzz is an Action Adventure film.  One way the film fits the action adventure genre would be that there is a shootout in the clip, this fits the action adventure genre as the protagonist, Angel, is alone but very well armed and the antagonists out number Angel and are also well armed. The shootout begins with the man in the big coat swinging out a shot gun and firing it at Angel as Angel dives out of the way and the bullet hits a wall. This fits the genre as it is very fast and aggressive as the antagonist gives Angel no time to try and fight back. Also as the shootout progresses it shows each one of the villagers (antagonists) revealing their weapons, One of the enemies pulls out a blanket from his car and it shows his selection of weapons hidden underneath, this fits the genre as in a lot of action adventure films the enemies come prepared and ready with a wide range of weapons.

Also the characters fit the action adventure film genre as all the characters are trained shooters as they easily aim for Angel, and Angel fits the genre well as he easily dodges the antagonist’s fire and knows when to fight back in a smart and strategic way. At one point in the clip a middle aged woman rides a bike with no hands whilst shooting at Angel, this fits the genre very well as it shows the skill and technique that the enemies have. As Angel rides up on a white horse it shows that he is the hero of the film as in old films a hero would always ride a white horse, also when he spits out a toothpick and say ‘good morning’ it shows that he is not scared about what is about to come and it shows that he is very calm, this matches other action characters as they prepare themselves for the battle ahead.

Question 3. Discuss the ways people are represented in this extract.

In the extract Angel is represented as the hero who has rode in on a horse to save the day, and the old villagers are represented as the enemy. This breaks the stereotype of old village folk as you would expect the villagers to help the protagonist and you would not expect an old man to pull out a gun and start shooting at other characters. Also the stereotype of a middle aged woman has been broken as the woman on the bike seems like a nice woman who could have children but she then shows her true self when she rides her bike with no hands whilst ruthlessly shooting at Angel. In other action adventure films a shootout is usually set in a major city or in a war zone, so this extract shows a different side to the rural village as it is destroyed by gun shots and is filled with violence. The rural village is now represented as a high crime city and not as a cute harmless town full of kind people.  Finally, Danny is represented as Angels side kick, and he does fit the usual character of a side kick, as he always has funny one liner to say even when they are in the middle of danger. Also Danny does not have many police officer skills but he shows at the end that he can be very good at what he does which is also what happens in a lot of action adventure films as the side kick always shows their true talent towards the end of the film.

The Hurt locker

The hurt locker fits the conventions of an action adventure genre in many ways. One way the film fits these conventions is the characters that are included in the film, the main character that helps the man detach the bomb from his chest fits the genre as he looks like a strong leader and he knows how to control his group. His costume is a war suit which also fits the genre as a lot of action adventure films are set in a war.  Also the events that take place fit the action adventure genre. When the poor man walks up to the group of soldier’s suspense raises and the suicide bomb event showed the acting skills of the cast as the characters really had to act afraid and scared. The death of the man also fit the conventions of as there is always a surprise death when you begin to believe that they will be able to live but they do not.

Costume

Rita from Edge of Tomorrow wears a lot of combat clothing, yet her figure and fitted clothing enables her to look feminine. For the first ¾ of the film you see Rita wearing her war uniform which consists of her under clothing which is a black tracksuit with extra padding and a red and black robotic armour which is unique to Rita as everyone else’s is just black. The added colour of red also adds feminism to her costume as red is an attractive colour which helps her look her best even when she is at war. At other times, like when she first meets Officer Cage, she may be wearing a black tracksuit for training, even though she is very strong and tough the outfits that she wears help her feminine side come to light.

Hair

Rita always has her hair in a Plait, this shows that she is a practical woman as she does not want her hair to get in the way when she is fighting for her life at war. However, her hair plait is also very feminine as she has not just got it up in a ponytail, which is very standard, she has it is a very neat plait which shows that she wants to be fierce and feminine at the same time which is a good image to have when she is the best soldier the army have got.

Make up

In Edge of Tomorrow Rita wears very little make up apart from mascara, which undoubtedly makes her look very feminine and attractive. However she also wears special effect make up, like fake blood and dirt so that her character looks realistic, because she is not going to look perfect when she is a futuristic war. Rita’s little make up makes her look natural and pure, but she also has make up on to make the film realistic and it also shows Rita’s feminine and tough personality.

Props

Rita does not have many props apart from her suit of armour which she wears throughout the film, and she also has her sword, which only she has, being the best soldier in the army. Her sword has a great impact on the audience as it shows how deadly Rita can be as she can do a lot of damage with her famous sword. However it also shows her feminine side as her sword if very sleek and slim, which shows agility, but also power.

Settings

The film is set in a destroyed world, where aliens from mysterious planets have attacked and ruined. It is also set in a secured and segregated war camp where Rita trains as the face of the war. The world at this point is very dark and broken which makes the film realistic and believable. Rita is mainly set in her training arena where she spends a lot of her time, the obstacles and tasks that she takes on portrays an agile and feminine look which really shows Rita’s personality.

•What audience are they aimed at? Why?

Bad Education- It is aimed at teenagers as it is based in a high school and it includes all the stereotypical pupils that go to many different skills, teenagers can relate it to themselves or to people they know.

Miranda- It is aimed at middle aged adults as it relates to the midlife crisis’ they go through and it also contains the stereotypical characters that the audience can relate to.

•Why are they on at that time and on that channel? Link to 'type' of comedy and target audience.

Bad Education- it is on at 10pm on bbc three. This is because it has some bad language in and grown up material is used. T is showed on bbc three as teenagers watch shows on bbc a lot more than other channels as all teenage based comedies and shows are showed on this channel.

The IT Crowd

The IT Crowd is a classic Sit-com as it demonstrates witty and childish humor that would not really happen in everyday life. The characters are abnormally stupid and most of the time unfunny which puts a downer on the show as they are so over the top. The characters are also very stereo typed to certain types of people for example they are very nerdy and that strongly comes across. Sitcoms are for certain people as they may not be funny to a lot of people as it was not funny to me.
